The Potato Council’s Potato Week is under way, aimed to drive awareness and sales of named potato varieties, and give British Potato growers a boost.

Here’s a quote from the Potato Council website:

Potato Council marketing manager, Kate Cox, said: “The autumn is a crucial time for potato consumption and the crux of our campaign – which is timed to coincide with main crop harvesting – is to encourage shoppers to trade up to popular named varieties. In doing so, we aim to promote increased consistency and enjoyment of potato-meals eaten in the home and encourage shoppers to see that they are worth paying a little more for. This in turn, will drive value growth of the potato category.

Commendable, though Mrs L’s hackles have risen slightly at the the (seemingly) women-only focused campaign, and the slighly nauseous title of “Maris Piper Mums” on the Love Potato Website. Perhaps in the Potato Council world, men are farmers, and the little woman is the cook? There are plenty of Agratech friends where the man does the weekly shop, and produces equal, if not much finer fayre than their lady partners.  I can hear the cries of ‘calm down, dear’. But maybe next year we could have the Maris-Men?! 😉

That being said, there are some great recipes on the Love Potato website, and in particular Mr L is going to have a go at the Sticky Orange Potato Cake, so we’ll report back later.

Potato week runs 7-13 October. Happy shopping and cooking!

New Regulations introduced by Royal Mail and My Hermes affecting Fertilisers, Weed & Pest Control                           Banned Package

With immediate effect we can no longer send any Weed Killers, Pesticides or products containing Nitrates by Royal Mail, or By My Hermes delivery services.

All pesticides, weedkillers and nitrate containing products can now only be dispatched by carrier delivery services. Whilst we appreciate that some sellers will disregard this change, The Royal Mail has issued stern warnings that any business found posting these items will face prosecution.

Here at Agratech we have found that most customers combine weed killer and a backpack or pressure sprayer purchase, thus paying only one delivery charge, and we recommend that you continue to do so, although of course we are happy to ship stand-alone weed killer purchases, where courier delivery option has been chosen.

We reserve the right to cancel any orders for Weed Killers, Pesticides or other Nitrate containing product where the customer has selected the incorrect postage.

Delivery of trade and industrial chemicals will continue by courier as previously.

Warner Edwards Gin was meant to be a part-time project, a fill-in for the down-season in Lavender Essential Oil production. However, three years and some heavy research later, old friends

Tom Warner and Sion Edwards have a product to be proud of!

Realising  from the outset that their biggest selling point would be the provenance of their product, the pair distill and bottle the Gin at the farm premises and use Spring Water from one of the Northamptonshire farm fields.

The product has super-strong branding and has been taken up by leading food and drink retailers including Fortnum & Mason and Harvey Nichols, with the pair sticking to a plan to find the right person in the right store and to approach them directly.

There are plans for fruit flavoured Gins to come, we can’t wait to try them!

You can see a full story here on farmers Weekly Interactive.

The Warner Edwards Website is here, and you can buy the Gin online, too – quick pass the credit card!
